The offer we're using
Bookmaker X: 'Place a £20 bet at odds of 2.0 or greater, get a £20 free bet.' The free bet is stake-not-returned (SNR) and expires seven days after credit.
This is a common welcome structure. Real UK bookmakers vary in the exact wording but the mechanics are almost identical.
Step 1 — Setup
- Log in to your exchange (Smarkets in this example). Confirm the balance is enough to cover roughly £22 of liability.
- Open the odds matcher. Filter by your bookmaker, offer type 'qualifying', minimum rating 97%.
- Sort the results by 'rating'. The top-ranked market is the one you want.
Step 2 — Finding the market
The odds matcher surfaces a Premier League 'Draw No Bet' market where the bookmaker prices Team A at 2.00 and Smarkets lays Team A at 2.02. Smarkets commission is 2%. This is a 99% rating — as good as we can hope for.
Click through to the bookmaker's version of the market to confirm the price hasn't moved. Then click through to the exchange to confirm the lay volume shown is available. Both open in the same tabs you'll use in the next step.
Step 3 — Placing the qualifier
- In the odds matcher's calculator, enter: back odds 2.00, back stake £20, lay odds 2.02, commission 2%. The calculator returns a lay stake of £19.80 and a liability of £20.20.
- Back Team A (Draw No Bet) at 2.00 for £20 with the bookmaker. Confirm the bet on the bet slip. Screenshot the confirmation.
- Immediately switch to the exchange tab. Lay Team A at 2.02 for £19.80. Confirm the lay bet has been matched (not just placed). Screenshot the confirmation.
- Both bets are now live. Whichever side wins the match, your net position lands at roughly –£0.40 (the qualifying loss).
Step 4 — After settlement
Wait for the match to end and the bookmaker to settle your bet. Most bookmakers credit the free bet within an hour of settlement — some take up to 24 hours.
When the free bet arrives you'll see a token in your bookmaker account (often labelled 'Free Bet' or 'Bet Credits'). It sits alongside your cash balance and can be applied to any qualifying market.
Step 5 — Placing the free bet
In the odds matcher, switch the filter to 'Free bet SNR'. Look for a selection with high back odds (5.0+) and a strong rating (80%+).
Suppose the matcher surfaces a selection at back 6.00 and lay 6.20, commission 2%. Enter these into the SNR calculator with a £20 stake. The calculator returns a lay stake of £16.13, liability £83.87, and expected retained value of £15.80.
Apply the free bet to the bookmaker slip (most bookmakers show a tick-box or a token selector), stake £20, place. Screenshot.
Immediately lay £16.13 on the exchange at 6.20. Screenshot.
Step 6 — Result
Whichever side wins the market, you take home roughly £15.80 in cash. Deducting the £0.40 qualifying loss you paid earlier, your net profit for the offer is £15.40.
That's 30–45 minutes of work for £15 tax-free. Multiplied across every UK bookmaker's welcome offer, this is where the widely-quoted £500–£1,000 beginner figure comes from.
Kelly's tips
- ✦Screenshot your bet slips on both sides. Disputes are rare, but easy to resolve with proof.
- ✦Note settlement times: some Bet Builders don't settle until after final whistle, which delays the free bet.
- ✦If the exchange price drifts during placement, recalculate — never place both bets and 'sort it later'.
- ✦Bookmark the offer's T&C page. If a promo credit doesn't arrive on time, quoting the exact wording speeds up support.
Common mistakes
- ✕Backing the qualifier and forgetting to lay.
- ✕Placing the free bet at 2.0 odds and losing most of its cash value.
- ✕Using the free bet on a market restricted by the offer terms (some exclude enhanced or boosted markets).
- ✕Rounding the lay stake to the nearest pound. Always enter the exact figure the calculator returns.
FAQs
Do I have to bet on football?
No — the technique works for any sport with a liquid exchange market. Football, tennis and horse racing are the easiest to find liquidity for.
What if my qualifier wins?
Then you win the bookmaker bet and lose the lay bet. The maths still lands within a few pence of the calculated qualifying loss.
How long between placing the qualifier and receiving the free bet?
Anywhere from immediate to 24 hours. Most bookmakers deliver within an hour of the qualifier settling.
Can I place both bets on my phone?
Yes, but a laptop with two browser tabs is much less error-prone for a first bet. Move to mobile once you're confident.
