Complete beginner's guide

This guide is for someone who has never placed a bet before. Work through it in order. Don't skip the qualifying-bet section — that's where most beginner mistakes happen and where a rushed first attempt turns a £15 profit into a £20 loss.

Before you start

  • You are 18 or over and comfortable using gambling products responsibly.
  • You have a working bank of at least £100 (£150–£200 is more comfortable).
  • You have 30–60 minutes to place your first bet without distractions.
  • You have photo ID and a recent utility bill or bank statement ready — most UK bookmakers verify new accounts within 24 hours.
  • You have a dedicated email address for bookmaker sign-ups. It keeps your inbox usable once the offer emails start arriving.

Step 1 — Open your exchange account

Sign up to a betting exchange before anything else. Smarkets is the cleanest starting point; Betfair has the deepest liquidity, especially for horse racing. Deposit around £50 — this is your 'lay bank'.

Spend fifteen minutes familiarising yourself with the interface. Understand the difference between the blue (back) and pink (lay) columns, the volume available at each price, and where the commission rate is displayed on your account. Place a tiny £2 lay bet on a live match just to see how liability is taken and returned. Consider that £2 the cost of your training.

Step 2 — Pick your first bookmaker

Choose a welcome offer with clear terms. William Hill, Sky Bet and Paddy Power are common starting points because their qualifying rules are simple and their free bets settle quickly.

Read the terms twice. Note the minimum odds, minimum stake, whether the free bet is stake-not-returned, and the expiry window. Deposit the minimum required — no more.

Step 3 — Use an odds matcher

An odds matcher shows you where a bookmaker's back price and an exchange's lay price are closest. That's where your qualifying loss will be smallest.

OddsMonkey and Outplayed both provide odds matchers. OddsMonkey's free trial is enough to complete your first three or four offers and is our recommended starting point. Filter by your specific bookmaker, then by 'qualifying' offer type.

Step 4 — Place the qualifying bet, then the free bet

Place the qualifying bet at the bookmaker. Immediately place the lay at the exchange for the calculated stake. Wait for settlement.

When the free bet lands, switch the odds matcher filter to 'Free bet SNR' and repeat the process at higher odds — usually somewhere between 5.0 and 8.0. Retain the cash value; don't gamble the free bet on a favourite hoping to double up.

Step 5 — Withdraw, then move on

Withdraw your profit to your bank account before opening the next offer. Keeping money moving keeps you honest about what you've actually made.

Then repeat the pattern with the next bookmaker. Don't stack five offers at once until you've completed at least three from start to finish and are comfortable with the mechanics.

Kelly's tips

  • Start with sports offers, not casino. Casino offers can be +EV but the variance overwhelms beginners.
  • Move on to the next welcome offer only after your current profit is safely withdrawn or held on the exchange.
  • Keep bookmaker apps installed only on one device — makes it easier to remember which accounts have live offers.
  • Screenshot every bet slip. Disputes are rare, but they resolve fastest when you have proof.
  • Treat your first three offers as training. If you break even after fees, you've done well — the pace picks up from offer four onwards.

Common mistakes

  • Depositing more than the offer requires and treating the surplus as 'gambling money'.
  • Layering multiple offers at once before you're confident on one.
  • Ignoring settlement delays — some sports offers credit the free bet hours after final whistle.
  • Placing the qualifier at odds just below the offer minimum by accident (e.g. 1.98 when the requirement is 2.00).
  • Using a bet builder to qualify when the offer specifies pre-match singles.

FAQs

How long does the first bet take?

About 30 minutes end to end, including account setup and ID upload. Your third qualifier will take five minutes.

Do I need special software?

You need an odds matcher, which most matched-betting services include. A profit-tracking spreadsheet or the built-in tracker is essential.

What if the exchange odds move before I lay?

Recalculate the stake using the matcher and lay at the current price — the profit shifts slightly but stays predictable. Never place both bets and 'sort it later'.

Do I need to bet on sports I watch?

No. Most matched bettors ignore fixtures entirely and pick the market with the best rating. Football, tennis and horse racing usually have the closest matches.

How quickly can I move through the welcomes?

Realistic pace is one to two offers per weekend for a first-timer. Experienced bettors complete a full welcome in under twenty minutes.
