How to work towards your first £500

Once you've made your first bit of money online, here's how you can build on it and aim for your first £500.

Nobody gets to £500 from one app. It nearly always comes from stacking a few things together, a couple of bigger one-off payouts plus smaller amounts ticking along. We're not going to put a timeframe on it, because it depends entirely on which offers you qualify for and how much time you've got.

  1. 1

Work through the bank offers you're eligible for

This is where most of the money is. Each switch is usually worth £100 or more. Space them out so you're not juggling direct debits, and check the small print each time, the qualifying steps change.

  2. 2

    Keep going with referrals

Once you've used an app yourself, referring people who'd genuinely find it useful is fair game. Don't spam friends with things you wouldn't use, it's not worth the goodwill.

  3. 3

    Make cashback a habit

Bigger purchases are where cashback actually matters, insurance, broadband, holidays. Getting into the habit of checking before you buy is worth more than chasing 30p on a takeaway.

  4. 4

Add investing sign-up offers if you're comfortable

Free share and welcome offers are real money, but you're putting your own cash in first and investments can go down. Only use money you're happy to leave invested.

  5. 5

Try matched betting if the maths appeals

Done properly it's one of the higher earners on this list, and winnings aren't taxed in the UK. It takes reading and patience, and if you find yourself chasing losses, stop.

  6. 6

Use surveys and AI training work to fill the gaps

AI training platforms pay better than surveys but the applications take a while, so get signed up early even if you don't start straight away.

Keep the spreadsheet going. By this point you'll have a lot of pending payments, and it's easy to lose track of one worth £150.
